The island is located off the North-West coast of Zanzibar. The wedge-shaped Tumbatu island is surrounded by a reef, making it somewhat isolated from the rest of Zanzibar, even though its southern shore is only 2km from the main Island, Developing rapidly and successfully corals reefs, with a large variety of soft and hard corals, the reef starts at 3 meters and drops down to 12 meters deep. This makes Tumbatu island a beautiful place for snorkeling as well as beginner divers.
What you will expect to see in Tumbatu Island there really good sport for the big yellow fin Tuna, Turtles, Leaf fish, Octopuses, Scorpion fish, Moray Eels, and Nudibranchs, one of the strongest fish around. Big Blue Marlin and a number of Striped and Black Marlin are also found, as well as Sailfish. During this season, multiple hook ups are normal, when the ocean can come alive with huge schools of Tuna in pursuit of smaller fish. During the billfish season, which is from November to March, Striped Marlin are the most prolific, sometimes showing in packs of ten. Large Blue and Black Marlin are also quite common during this period.
